Washing your cloth diapers
Q: Cloth vs. Disposable
Why use cloth diapers?
A:
Your baby's skin is like a sponge, absorbing any chemical it comes in contact with. Chemicals in disposable diapers can lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome, rashes, urinary tract infections, and possible reproductive dysfuntion. Cloth diapers have no gel (sodium polyacrylate) or dioxin which has been linked to cancer causing chemicals. Think about what you want next to your baby's skin for 24 hours a day.
Cloth diapers are much more comfortable against your baby's sensitive skin. You can have fun with cloth diapers, using a variety of colors and patterns.
Your baby will go through about 7000 to 8000 diaper changes before being potty trained, a huge impact on both your wallet and the environment!
Q: AIO diapers
What are AIO (all-in-one) diapers?
A:
AIO diapers are a one-piece diaper system. They have a waterproof outer layer, either PUL or polar fleece, and an absorbent soaker material either sewn into the diaper or it maybe detachable. These diapers need to be washed after each use, unless the soaker material is detachable, in which case you could just switch out the soaker and wash the outer layer when needed.
Q: Pocket diapers
What are pocket diapers?
A:
Pocket diapers are similar to AIO diapers. They have a waterproof outer material and stay dry material like micro fleece on the inside. They have a pocket opening where you can insert the absorbent material, usually micro terry or hemp. With this diaper, you choose the amount of absorbent material you need. After each use, remove the insert and wash. Because pocket diapers allow you to remove the insert, drying time is much less than with AIO diapers.
Q: Fitted diapers
What are fitted diapers?
A:
Fitted diapers resemble disposable diapers; they are contoured and fitted with elastic around the back and legs. They close with Velcro or snaps and have a snug fit on your baby. Fitted diapers are not waterproof and a diaper cover is needed.
Q: How many
How many cloth diapers will I need?
A:
This depends on how often you want to do laundry. If you are using AIO or Pocket diapers, between 20 to 30 is a good amount to allow you to do laundry every 2 to 3 days. Remember that infants will go through more diapers in a day than an older baby, so you may need more to start. If you are using fitted diapers with covers, 8 to 10 covers would be ideal, and you should have 20 to 30 fitted diapers.
Q: Washing your cloth diapers
How do I wash my diapers?
A:
First, DO NOT use bleach or fabric softeners! Both of these will make your diapers less absorbent. Wash no more than 2 dozen diapers at a time and use only a quarter to one-half the amount of detergent. Put all of the diapers, and diaper wipes, in the washing machine and run a COLD rinse. After this, you will want to run a HOT/COLD wash with an extra rinse cycle. If you can smell any odors after washing, you may need to run another rinse cycle to ensure no detergent buildup. Most diaper brands recommend drying on LOW heat. Diapers with PUL should be dried on HOT occasionally to keep seems tight and prevent leaks. Line drying is another option, this will extend the life of your diapers and the sun can help remove stains!
